Stone Carving/Lettering, 2019, 2020
Working with stone is something that has come about naturally through the public art works created for CHEB. I have had the opportunity to work with stone in various capacity from carving a half sphere into a large 20 ton block of granite and carving text into granite boulders on a site. These projects have been exciting and engaging to work on. As this work continues I find myself working with stone and my interest in the possibilities of stone carving grows.
Strangely enough working with stone is similar to working with glass. A lot of cold processes like wet diamond saw cutting, sandblasting, grinding and polishing use the same equipment and techniques. I have been able to use my existing skills and translate them from glass to stone to complete some of the stone projects I have worked on to date.
To further my skills in 2019 I took up a self-directed mentorship with a local stone mason in the traditions of slate letter carving. Learning the basics in the trade and exploring the potential of carved stone.
I am drawn to the labour of stone carving, the slowness, the handmade, and the naturalness of the material. It provides an opportunity to add weight to a statement as the saying goes - carved in stone. Stone carving – in particular lettering requires, time, attention and craft. It is something I am very interested in pursuing, developing my skill and style with stone carving.
The projects in this section are ones I have been working on for my own enjoyment and for friends.
