HAT Artist Residency

In 2007 I was selected to participate in Here and There (HAT) Project. HAT is a programme of international exchange research fellowships for designer-makers.

The HAT Project creates opportunities for designer makers to spend time working as artists in residence in a range of international contexts. Each residency is set up for an average of three months during which time the artists undertake practice based research.

My residency took place in Farnham, England at University College for the Creative Arts. The residency was 3 months and totally self directed. In the first 2 weeks, as an exercise to just get into the studio and make, I started blowing simple small clear glass tumblers. I also wanted to get into the habit of drawing each day. I came upon the idea of a visual drawing diary on the cups. One drawing on one cup per day. 3 months, 90 cups, 90 drawings fired onto the surface of the glass.

The collection of cups were set out in reference to the grid of a monthly calendar. The visual diary was later exhibited as part of my exhibition Small is Beautiful at the JamFactory.

During the residency I explored various ways of combining glass and imagery. It was a challenging residency, but I got alot out of my studio explorations.
